Created in 1971, Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal's only national park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Spanning over 700 km² of mountainous terrain, it preserves prehistoric megalithic remains, the Roman military road (Geira) and medieval monasteries. The region maintains centuries-old traditions of shepherding, linen weaving and the famous love handkerchiefs (lenços dos namorados).
The largest village in the park, famous for its cluster of granite grain stores (espigueiros) perched on smooth rock. The only village with public transport.
