Semana Santa in Braga

One of the most ancient and solemn Holy Week celebrations in the Iberian Peninsula. Since the 16th century, Braga transforms into a stage of faith, art and tradition.

A Living Tradition

500 Years of History

Braga's Semana Santa is considered one of the oldest and most important Holy Week celebrations in Portugal and the entire Iberian Peninsula. Its roots go back to the 16th century, when Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa initiated a process of religious and urban renewal that turned Braga into a city of faith and baroque art.

Today, the celebrations bring together thousands of participants in fraternal processions that wind through the historic centre, accompanied by the sound of drums and the flickering light of thousands of candles. It is an experience that moves even the most secular of visitors.

Main Processions

The Processions

Each procession has its own character, history and route. Here are the highlights you should not miss.

1Palm Sunday

Procession of Ecce Homo

Opens Holy Week with an imposing procession that commemorates Christ's entry into Jerusalem. Features elaborate floats and hundreds of participants.

2Holy Thursday

Procession of the Last Supper

One of the most theatrical processions, reenacting the Last Supper with extraordinary attention to detail. A deeply evocative experience.

3Good Friday

Procession of the Buried Christ

The most solemn of all processions, held at night with torches and drums. The silence that accompanies the passage of the cortège is deeply moving.

4Easter Sunday

Procession of the Resurrection

Closes the cycle with joy and music, celebrating the resurrection of Christ. A sharp contrast to the solemnity of Good Friday.
